Light switches are one of the most common electrical devices used in Australian homes and workplaces. They allow you to control the lights in a room; as such, they can be found in almost every room in a building. It’s useful to understand the basics of wiring a light switch so that you can understand how they work. However, it’s important to note that wiring your own light switch is illegal in Australia, as all electrical work must be performed by a licenced electrician. Therefore, this article is presented for information only.
Safety First
Whenever you are dealing with electricity, safety is the first priority. Before attempting to wire a light switch, ensure you have all the proper safety equipment and tools, including rubber-soled shoes, insulated gloves, protective eyewear and a voltage tester. You should also ensure that the power to the circuit you are working on is shut off at the main circuit breaker.
Gathering the Right Materials
For this project, you will need a single pole light switch, a wall box, a length of electrical cable, a wire stripper and wire nuts. Ensure that all the materials are rated for the voltage of the circuit you are working on.
Installing the Wall Box
The wall box is where the light switch will be mounted. It should be mounted securely to a wooden stud with screws and wall anchors. Make sure the box is located at the correct height and that it is level.
Attaching the Wires
Once the wall box is installed, you attach the wires to the light switch. Start by stripping the insulation off the ends of the wires and connecting them to the switch. Make sure the wire colours match the switch terminals. Once the wires are connected, use the wire nuts to secure them.
Testing
After the wires are connected and secured, you can test the light switch. Make sure the power to the circuit is still turned off, and use the voltage tester to check for a current. If all is in order, you can turn the power back on and test the switch. If the switch works, the light switch has been successfully wired.
